第課 Dì shí kè 春節 Chūn jié(Lesson 10 Spring Festival)

English
Spring Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday when people joyfully welcome the New Year and celebrate the arrival of spring. Chinese people greatly value this traditional festival. Whether they are in China or abroad, they all celebrate this special day. Teacher Wang said that the Chinese teachers from the East Asian Department are planning to hold a Spring Festival party and will invite all students learning Chinese to attend. Everyone will make dumplings together, eat, drink, sing songs, dance, and happily and lively celebrate the New Year.
Jiaxing and Jiaqi were extremely excited when they heard this. They really wished that tomorrow would be the Chinese New Year. However, when they thought about having to perform, they started to worry. Since this is a Chinese party, of course, they would have to perform in Chinese. After thinking it over again and again, they finally came up with a good idea.

Jiaqi: Honey, what delicious food are you going to make for your beloved husband tonight?
Jiaxing: Take a guess! What do we Chinese people always eat during Spring Festival?
Jiaqi: Dumplings, of course! But what kind do you want?
Jiaxing: Do you really need to ask? Don’t you know me by now?
Jiaqi: I really don’t know!
Jiaxing: Really? And you call yourself my soulmate?
Jiaqi: Dumplings, right?

Jiaxing: That’s okay! I’ll teach you.
Jiaqi: Great! (Starts singing) “You knead the dough, and I’ll roll the wrappers—”
Jiaxing: “I’ll mix the filling—what will you do next?” (Stops singing)

Jiaxing: Watch! Put the wrapper in your left hand, add a spoonful of filling in the center, then squeeze it together with your right hand—and that’s it!
Jiaqi: Wow, honey, you’re so smart! You explain it so well!
Jiaxing: And you’re amazing—you learned it so fast!
Jiaqi: Wait a second… are these dumplings? They look more like dog ears!
