Introduction

Hello, everyone!

Welcome to the first-year Chinese learning platform at Columbia University.

This platform currently consists of two main sections.

The first section is Chinese Phonetics, where we provide a systematic introduction to the phonetic aspects of the Chinese language, including the tonal system, all initials, finals, pronunciation methods, spelling rules, tone sandhi, neutral tone phenomena, and retroflexion. Each section is accompanied by exercises for practice. We have made the content available in two formats: web-based and PowerPoint versions. The content is the same in both formats, with only the presentation style differing. You can choose whichever format suits you best.

The second section is Chinese Characters. To help you memorize characters more efficiently, under the “stroke order” menu, we’ve included stroke orders, both simplified and traditional characters, pinyin, English translations, audio recordings, radicals, the meanings of radicals, and explanations of the structure of some characters. Additionally, under the “radicals” menu, we’ve summarized key radicals, the characters they include, and corresponding exercises.

The goal of these materials is to help you better prepare for class and review more effectively afterward, enabling you to master Chinese phonetics and more quickly memorize new characters, enhancing your overall Chinese learning experience.

Wishing you a pleasant learning journey!
