When he was young, he loved playing soccer the most. Later, he became interested in cycling. After that, he also liked baseball, basketball, and tennis. Now, he goes swimming every day. Jiaqi said that he loves painting the most and has wanted to be a painter since he was a child. Additionally, he enjoys playing chess and the guitar. In the future, if he has the opportunity, he also wants to go to China to learn calligraphy. Everyone said that Jiaqi is very talented and skilled in many arts—music, chess, calligraphy, and painting—he excels in all of them.

Lǎoshī: Jīntiān wǒmen yào xiānghù tán yì tán zìjǐ de àihào.

Teacher: Today, we will talk to each other about our hobbies.
Jiaxing: I have so many hobbies!
Teacher: Great! We’ll form pairs—2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14—that makes seven groups.
Jiaxing: Jiaqi, we’re in the same group, what a coincidence!
Jiaqi: Teacher, do we talk about our own hobbies?
Teacher: Yes. Later, each group will introduce their partner’s hobbies to the rest of the class.
Jiaxing: I heard that many people here are multitalented, mastering music, chess, calligraphy, and painting.
Jiaqi: Jiaxing, you go first!
Jiaxing: I have so many hobbies that I don’t even know where to start.
Jiaqi: Just start wherever you think of first.
Jiaxing: Well, I guess I’ll start from my childhood.
Jiaqi: Sounds good. What did you like the most when you were little?
Jiaxing: When I was little, I loved playing soccer the most. I played every day.
Jiaqi: Soccer? Do you mean American football?
Jiaxing: No, not American football.
Jiaqi: I thought most Americans liked playing American football. What about later?
Jiaxing: Later, I got into cycling. After that, I liked baseball, basketball, and tennis. Now, I go swimming every day.

Jiaqi: We really have different interests. My favorite hobby is drawing.
Jiaxing: No wonder! When I first saw you, I could tell you were a little different.
Jiaqi: Why’s that?
Jiaxing: I was just teasing you. But artists do tend to be a little special. Sorry, go ahead!
Jiaqi: Since I was little, I’ve always wanted to be a painter. I’m especially interested in Eastern art.
Jiaxing: Oh, that’s why you’re majoring in East Asian Art, right?
Jiaqi: Exactly! I chose this major because I love Eastern art.
Jiaxing: But that’s not exactly a hobby. What else do you enjoy?
Jiaqi: I also enjoy playing chess and playing the guitar.
Jiaxing: Can you play the piano?
Jiaqi: I learned to play the piano when I was little, but I didn’t like it, so I stopped.
Jiaxing: What does “playing the piano to a cow” mean?
Jiaqi: Isn’t that what we’re doing right now, “playing the piano to a cow”?
Jiaxing: Hehe, I guess we just have different interests.
Jiaqi: If I have the opportunity in the future, I…

Jiaxing: Teacher, let me start by talking about my good friend, my good brother—Li Jiaqi’s hobbies!
Teacher: Okay, Jiaxing, you can begin.
Jiaxing: First, let me ask everyone a question: “What is Li Jiaqi’s major?”
Classmates: East Asian Art.
Jiaxing: That’s right. Since he was young, he liked painting and wanted to become a painter.
Classmates: Anything else?
Jiaxing: He also likes playing chess.
Classmates: What kind of chess?
Jiaxing: I didn’t ask about that. Jiaqi?
Jiaqi: Teacher, how do you say GO in Chinese?
Teacher: GO is called “wéiqí” in Chinese.
Jiaxing: That’s right, he also likes playing wéiqí.
Classmates: I also like playing wéiqí.
Jiaxing: He also likes playing the guitar. Sorry, Jiaqi, you said that if you have the opportunity in the future, what else would you like to do?
Jiaqi: In the future, if I have the opportunity, I would like to go to China to learn calligraphy.
Teacher: Good, thank you, Jiaxing.
Jiaxing: You’re welcome.
Teacher: Please, everyone, use the words we’ve learned to describe what kind of person Jiaqi is.
Classmates: Talented in many areas—music, chess, calligraphy, and painting, he excels in everything.
Jiaqi: Thank you, but I’m not that great, not that great.
